Moblin technology received a hearty endorsement from direct-sales PC giant Dell. "Dell is very interested in Moblin at present and is working very closely with its key Moblin partners (Intel and Canonical) investigating potential offerings," wrote Doug Anson, technology strategist, on Dell's official corporate blog.
Anson's blog post also mentions Google's "Chrome OS" project, albeit in less definite terms. "Dell plans to evaluate the Chrome OS and other alternative operating environments," the executive wrote.
Anson's comments ignited a firestorm of press coverage, showing how high interest runs these days in alternative Linux-based operating system technology. Some of the first stories to appear on the heels of Anson's post yesterday afternoon include:
Long-time PC marketshare leader Dell was passed by HP in Q1, 2009, according to IDC figures quoted by Reuters. An earlier Gartner study, meanwhile, found Dell slipping to the number two spot in Q4, 2008, according to story in the Silicon Alley Insider.
